Peter Mayhew: George Lucas, Kathleen Kennedy e il cast di Star Wars ricordano l'attore scomparso

"Peter era un uomo straordinario. Era l'essere umano più simile a un Wookie: aveva un cuore grande, un animo gentile - e ho imparato tantissimo da lui. Era un buon amico, e sono rattristato dalla sua scomparsa." Così George Lucas, che scelse Peter Mayhew per interpretare Chewbacca in Star Wars oltre quarant'anni fa trasformandolo in una vera e propria icona, ricorda l'amico dopo la diffusione della notizia della sua morte.

"La notizia della morte di Peter Mayhew ci rattrista profondamente. Sin dal 1976, l'interpretazione iconica di Peter del leale e amabile Chewbacca è stata assolutamente parte integrante del successo del personaggio e della stessa saga di Star Wars. La prima volta che incontrai Peter, durante Il Risveglio della Forza, rimasi immediatamente impressionata dalla sua natura gentile. Peter era in grado di esprimere la sua personalità attraverso il suo abile uso dei gesti, della postura e dello sguardo. Amiamo tutti Chewie, e dobbiamo ringraziare Peter per questo ricordo che durerà per sempre", questo il commento di Kathleen Kennedy, presidente della Lucasfilm.

Harrison Ford ha diffuso un comunicato ufficiale ricordando Mayhew: "Peter Mayhew era un uomo gentile, possedeva una grandissima dignità e un carattere nobile. Questi aspetti della sua personalità, oltre alla sua saggezza e la sua grazia, li ha conferiti anche a Chewbacca. Siamo stati compagni sullo schermo e amici nella vita per oltre 30 anni, gli volevo bene. Ha messo la sua anima in questo personaggio e ha portato tanta felicità al pubblico di Star Wars. Chewbacca ha avuto un ruolo centrale nel successo dei film che abbiamo fatto insieme. Sapeva quanto erano importanti i fan del franchise per il suo successo ed era loro devoto. Io e milioni di altre persone non dimenticheremo mai Peter e ciò che ci ha dato."
